How we work

MAMMALS

Squirrels:
Many squirrels rescued are infants.Such situations mainly occur when the nests fall down accidentally or when the mother is killed by predators.such infants are hand raised and taken care untill they have the capability to survive on their own.later they are released back in the suitable habitat.

Monkeys
Due to their arboreal nature, monkeys usually come in contact with electric wires or high tension cables and this results in serious injuries. Such monkeys are rescued and given immediate medical attention. Monkeys kept as pets illegally or used for street performances are confiscated with the help of the police if required when information is received. After proper medication they are subjected to rehabilitation with other monkeys and later released as a group. Sometimes due to dog attacks or road accidents a female monkey ends up losing its life, leaving its young one orphaned. Such orphaned babies are rescued and hand rose until they are big enough to depend on themselves and rehabilitated with other monkeys.

Bats:
Different bat species suffer injuries when they come in contact with electric wires. They usually have their wings rupture or claws charred due to electrocution.such type of seriously injured bats are rescued and given medical attention until they recover from their injuries and later released back to the wild.

Slender Loris
The Slender Loris is a small, nocturnal primate which prefers thick, thorny vegetation wherein they can easily escape predators and find the large assortment of insects that is the mainstay of their diet. Native people have always believed that all parts of the slender loris have some medicinal or magical powers due to which they are smuggled and they are also tortured during black magic rituals. This has contributed greatly to the decline of the slender loris.Destruction of their habitat is another reason for their decline.

REPTILES

Indian Star Tortoise
The Indian star tortoise is quite popular in the exotic pet trade. A large number of specimens are found in the illegal wildlife trade in India. They are smuggled out of the country and sold to pet traders. On receiving information about their captivity, they are confiscated, rehabilitated and released back to the wild.

Soft shelled turtles
All soft shell turtles in Asia are prized as a delicacy and as a cheap source of proteins by local communities. Also soft shelled turtles are found in the human habitat as a result of habitat destruction.

Snakes
Certain snakes such as the cobra are used by snake charmers for road side shows. Such snakes are usually defanged or their upper and lower jaws are stitched together. Such snakes are confiscated from the snake charmers medicated and rehabilitated. As humans are increasingly encroaching in to forests it is resulting in habitat destruction as a result of which snakes are increasingly found in human vicinity. In such cases upon receiving information, people from PFA rescue the snakes and release them in a suitable habitat.

Some snakes such as the red sand boa are illegally traded because of many disbelief's that people have about them. People think that the red sand boa brings good luck and money after a ritual is performed involving the snake. On receiving information about a sand boa kept in captivity PFA confiscates and releases the snake in a suitable habitat.

Monitor Lizards
Monitor lizards are large reptiles which have become a staple in the reptile pet trade. Monitor lizards are eaten in parts of southern India, where their meat is considered as an aphrodisiac. Catching or killing of monitor lizards is banned under Protected Species Act. On receiving information about a monitor lizard kept in captivity PFA confiscates the specimen and later it is rehabilitated and released back to the wild.

BIRDS

Black Kites often perch on electric wires and are frequent victims of electrocution. Their habit of swooping to pick up dead rodets or other road kill leads to collisions with vehicles. Sometimes baby chicks of birds such as black kite, dove, and barn owl etc fall out of their nests accidentally and end up exhausted due to lack of food. Such chicks are rescued and hand raised and released in to a suitable habitat.
Parakeets are confiscated form fortune tellers who tend to clip the wings of the bird so that it cannot escape from their captivity. Later they are rehabilitated and released in to their habitat.
Other sources of injuries to various birds such as pond herons, dove, barbet etc are entanglement in kite ropes, fights among themselves, starvation due to lack of food etc. Such birds are rescued and rehabilitated and released in a suitable habitat.
